Psst…What We Loved in October

Above: “On trips home to Massachusetts, I am always inspired by the Cambridge color palette: houses in somber charcoals and grays with lavender front doors. On a recent fall weekend, I was also delighted by the many shades of Boston ivy. And by the Harvard Art Museums’s Renzo Piano building with its top-floor pigment collection visible through glass walls.” – Margot Above: “Heading to NYC last month, I intentionally left room in my carryon and made an obligatory pilgrimage to Goods for the Study. Give me a shop selling paper goods, old-fashioned stationary, notebooks, and envelopes over a clothing store anytime. On the way home my suitcase was full of notebooks and—my favorite—journals with hand-marbled covers.” – Annie Above: “Snapped this on a recent walk. it’s a good reminder that you don’t need expensive hardscaping to create a pretty path.” – Fan Above: “I just picked up a copy of What If We Get It Right: Visions of Climate Futures by Ayana Elizabeth Johnson. I bought it at a new bookstore called Books & Cake that just opened in Hillsdale, NY. The bookstore has a fun way of organizing its books. The shelves are arranged by mood: Read if you need . . . to veer off the beaten path or a real life story or characters whose loss you mourn when the book is over. Plus, there’s cake!” – Melissa Above: “I got over to see the renovation of MoMA’s SoHo design store—they did such a great job. I love how the renovation reveals the historic structure. I got a look at the Marimekko x Artek collaboration, which I found delightful in person.” – Laura (Photograph via Artek x Marimekko.) Above: “On a recent trip to Paris, I wandered into Al’o Paris, a small concept shop at 92 Rue de Turenne specializing in French workwear and clothing brands like Orcival and Vétra. Prices are within range of mere mortals, and I confess that my family is now outfitted to look like Parisian balayeurs or pêcheurs.” —Julie Above: “I recently began making my own tortillas at home, tinting the masa with things like blue-green algae and pressed cilantro. After years of getting by with a small, amateur press, I finally upgraded to a larger, weightier one from Masienda. It’s completely transformed the tortilla-making process—and it’s the best-looking option I’ve found yet. I use it with natural wax paper (instead of plastic wrap) which I find works just as well. This is the one I bought, in white of course.” – Alexa (Photograph via Masienda.) Above: “I’ve been on a marathon of garden visits this month. This is the steeply terraced garden at Kiftsgate (with photographer Britt Willoughby). We’d been to Sezincote in the morning and grabbed lunch at Batsord Arboretum in between. They are all intensely atmospheric, especially at the end of the season.” – Kendra
