Steal This Look: An Earthy, Richly Textured Living Area in LA
Timeless and earthy: That’s the sensibility of this 1907 home in LA, redone by Patrick Bernatz Ward. Today we’re taking a closer look at the elements that make up the living area; here’s how to approximate the look at home with a mix of vintage and readily available finds.

Above: Patrick’s aim in redoing the century-old house was “to thoughtfully honor the historical architecture while incorporating contemporary California materials, craftsmanship, and locally made furniture.”
Above: A detail of the custom oiled red-gum eucalyptus seating by artist Nik Gelormino of Another Good Job (@another_good_job).
Palette
Above: The living room walls, like the walls throughout most of the house (with the exception of the kitchen and study), are painted in Portola Paint’s Classic Gray Lime Wash.
Above: The shutters are done in Studio Green by Farrow & Ball.
Furniture & Lighting
Above: The built-in sofas, made of locally sourced red-gum eucalyptus, were custom made, but the Taiko Stained Teak Outdoor Loveseat from CB2 is a good match for the sleek, oiled-wood look ($3,699).
Above: A lookalike for the caned chair is the Barrel Back Caned Dining Armchair, $649 from Pottery Barn.
Above: Adrian Pearsall’s vintage slate-topped coffee tables can be found via Chairish, 1stDibs, and the like.
Above: The Serena Lamp is a readily available lookalike; it’s $449 from Room & Board.
Above: The Gira floor lamp is $169 from Article.
Textiles
Above: Authentic tuareg rugs can be found from a variety of purveyors like Chairish; head here to browse.
Above: The Solid Mohair Throw in Mustard is $335 from Hawkins New York.
Accessories
Above: The Vintage Linen Bolster Pillow Cover in Natural is $129 from Parachute. (It fits their Down Alternative Bolster Pillow Insert.)
Above: A terra cotta Plant Pot and Saucer is $19.99 from H&M Home. (We also like the Terracotta Footed Planters from Burke Decor for more of a splurge.)
Above: A Fresh Olive Branch Bunch is $68 from Terrain.
